Fall and Redemption

Friday night marked my first ever loss to Wanna Buy a Duck at winter league and our first loss of the season thus far. As I suspected would happen with our inexperienced but athletic women, they let our girls catch unders and forced no dump to try to generate turnovers to fair success. We actually played one of our cleaner games to date but wound up 2 points short. I skied Reed, Charlie and Jeremy each once, and Jeremy takes exception and gets a deep D on me later in the game. Having a 4 man rotation for 3 spots is not a sound plan either. We pulled close in the middle of the game when their guys forgot for a stretch that they could throw overheads.

Saturday brought 7 games of indoor at the annual one-day Minneapolis open tourney aka "Sub Zero guys versus CLX guys in the finals with some other games leading up to it" tourney. Last year, the CLX guys prevailed in the finals against my current and former SZ teammates, and there was much rejoicing. This year's team featured a new name (F*** Anna Nicole) and a steamlined the roster. The 6 games leading up to the finals where mostly a breeze.

The finals against the CLX contigent started with a very flat slow 0-3 run on their part. We pulled the game back to 3-3 and traded points until about 7-6. They are running only about a 7 man rotation for 5 spots and by the end of a full day of indoor, are clearly worn out. We push through a couple breaks in a row to help put the game out of reach. I caught the winning score on a breakmark forehand from Naz.

My favorite highlights from the day:

While playing the Flaming Moe men, Todd scored on Paul Norgaard and hit him with the spike after earlier in the same point, Paul contested an obvious foul by saying "I'm just playing like Todd does".

Winey and Todd both threw multiple wrist flip scores.

Naz using his typical "jump in the air and shimmy shake" dump cut and making defenders almost fall over.

Pat Baylis and Ben Hahn spooning while taking a nap together between rounds.

Tom Walker's disdain for everything and everyone.

Good to see Detroit got a D+ on the trade review.

P.S. Why isn't Bo Ryan getting any love for Coach of the Year?

just noticed this. You don't know me. Where does this random comment come from? Sorry you had such a boring day until the finals. Feel free to skip it next year.

It was only funny to me on one level. I'm not sure that the ultimate community, glass house that it is, will be able to recover from this stone. ;p

Tom is a great guy and a hard worker for the local community. Despite your blog obsession with winter league, Mark, I think you're a pretty nice guy too who just made a mistake here. I'll agree that Tom could smile a bit more, but I don't think you made any headway.

A month late,
Moe's DK
